Rio da Vida

“A river never goes back. It always moves forward. In life, you can’t go back; you have to move forward. Learn from the past, but don’t dwell on it. Keep flowing like a river.”

~ Paulo Coelho

If I were forced to wear one outfit over and over again, put me in an orange jumpsuit suit! Why an orange jumpsuit? Wearing an orange jumpsuit would be a stark reminder that we are all captive in a sense to the forces that shape us, that social construction is as real as the concrete beneath our feet, and that freedom or individual autonomy is not so much imaginary as it is overstated.

Imagine instead that your brother or sister is doing the best they can, that their success or failure is in some sense part of whatever life lesson they came into this world to learn. What if we were able to view our success with modesty and our failures with humility? Wouldn’t this perspective engender more compassion and empathy for all the ‘others’ with whom we inhabit this planet?

Put me in an orange jumpsuit!

  1. This is definitely a creative answer

  2. Love the river metaphor—so powerful and freeing! 🌊✨ And that orange jumpsuit line? Bold and brilliant! 😄🔥 Keep flowing forward, unapologetically!

  3. I began my response with “the orange jumpsuit” too but went in a slightly different direction. I love how we all can come at these prompts so differently! 🫶🏿

    1. Hey Shonda! Would love to read what you wrote (I have all I can do to write and publish, keep my day job, and attend class, so do not get to read as many posts as I would like). I wasn’t able to open your site… would mind posting a link here?

      1. That’s weird! I hope this link works. Let me know.
