Pop’s Ladder

“A father is someone you look up to no matter how far up the ladder you go.”

~ Anonymous

My father-in-law gave me his ladder many years ago. He bought it back in the late sixties and god only knows how many times he climbed up and down those rungs. God only knows how many times I’ve climbed up and down those rungs.

Pop wasn’t much of a handyman but he did his best, all without YouTube, which today can almost seem like cheating. But Pop taught me an invaluable lesson which is to just go for it. Having YouTube certainly helps visualize taking the leap, but sometimes I jump off a bridge too far, into the unknown netherworlds where I have no business floating. Yet, somehow, I find my way back, and ‘get ‘er done!

Yesterday my sister and I tackled mom’s tub. We did something called a tub conversion. Mom essentially now has a walk in shower, which is an absolute necessity for a 93 year old without any meniscus left on her knee.

If it weren’t for Pop giving me his ladder I’d never have climbed the ranks of home improvement high enough to even consider sawing out a section of a cast iron tub 😅… 7 hours later, mom has her wish and the fam saved a cool ten thousand dollars. Hat tip to sis for the idea and gumption to get this project rolling, and for the assists along the way to navigate the burps and hiccups that invariably come anytime you tackle something for the very first time.

Thanks Pop! Happy Father’s Day!
