“We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.”
~ Paulo Ceolho

Normally we vacationed on the Cape where the water is a balmy 56° on average. But one summer we opted for the Outer Banks. We rented a little house with a sign over the door that read Precious Moments.
Of course I had to then go find a recording of the saccharine pop song by The Three Degrees, When Will I see You Again. We played it for the kids and amongst lots of incredulous and fun loving laughter we sang that song for the next two weeks.
It was one of those miracle vacations where the weather was just right. My daughter had an entire school of mullet jumping over her head, reflecting the sunlight in such a way that it looked like she was wearing a halo. It wasn’t until years later that I learned this activity often coincides with the smaller fish likely being hunted by larger fish like bluefish or shark. Thankfully we saw neither.
Then my son lost a coveted ring toss, like a frisbees with its center console missing. We searched endlessly and went through a whole grieving process and had a tough talk about the nature of things, when three days later my foot touched something two or three feet down in the murky water. I knew immediately that it was the ring toss and reached down to retrieve it. I swam back to shore and jogged up to our blanket, where my son’s eyes were as wide as the aperture of the ring itself. Miracles!
The drive down and back was brutal! 14 or 15 hours in a minivan, back when minivans dominated the highways. But it was all worth it and the entire vacation was filled with precious moment.
