“Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile — especially a candy apple.”
~ Mark Twain

The food that brings me back in my mind’s eye to wax nostalgically about an idealized past is the candy apple. I’m not really sure how old I was when I first had one but my grandmother treated me to a candy apple when I was still a kid and we were walking the fair grounds.
It was a messy delight that still has me hooked to this day. The last candy apple I had was when I was with my wife at Disney World. When I returned from the concession she looked at me as if I’d lost my mind. Probably horrified in her mind’s eye about a future dental bill.
There isn’t much else in this world that is more decadent and delicious than a candy apple, but it’s worth it so long as you’ve got a toothbrush in your pocket to help with the cleanup.
If you can’t track down a candy apple or make your own, get in line for the next best thing: a caramel apple.
