“Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.”
~ Oscar Wilde

When push comes to shove, I am like The Fool, the first card in a Tarot deck. I will in the words of Alexander Pope, “rush in where angels refuse to tread.” But with age I am much less impetuous in regard to taking risks, which is perhaps what Pope’s admonishment was all about, and more fearless, which is what I think ancient wisdom teachings try and get across to us.
In the beginning, we are all fools. When we’ve not done something before what is foolish is to wait until a later time when we have more experience. How else do we gain experience? But to begin sometimes the thing to do, is to embrace our inner foolishness and take the leap anyway, into the unknown. This is true wisdom and The Fool knows this, and has faith that things work out. Maybe The Fool knows that transformation only happens after we leave the relative safety of the past, by stepping out, even if we cannot see all there is to see just yet. Maybe The Fool sees transformation as a process and that the next card in the deck, The Magician, is summoned to manifest the new ground beneath our feet, which miraculously clears a new way forward.
