Follow Your Bliss

“What is called resignation is confirmed desperation.”

~ Henry David Thoreau

My goal for retirement is to channel my energies and resources into behavioral patterns that help others, and that bring me as close as possible to experiencing the inherent joy I get from exercising those behaviors. In other words, my dream retirement is to do what I would do anyway, irrespective of whether or not I was retired. Doing what I love, finding my passion, or following my bliss sounds cliché but it’s not at all. To paraphrase Henry David Thoreau most people live lives of quiet desperation. Retirement in my mind says to put childish things away and to express a “characteristic of wisdom” by not doing desperate things.
