“A good name will wear out; a bad one may be turned; a nickname lasts forever.”
~ Johann Georg Ritter von Zimmermann

We didn’t have to change our names but there was a point in time when that gang we hung out with called each other “Lou.”
“Hey Lou!”
“Sup Lou?”
“Louieeeeeee!”
There was no rhyme or reason, but with probably a dozen or so members of is belonging to the group, that was a lot of “Lou’s.”
Reminiscent perhaps of that scene in Finding Nemo where a thousand seagulls are dive bombing the surf screeching “Mike! Mike! Mike!“ (actually, they are screeching mine, making mine, mine, but I heard it as Mike, Mike, Mike, and thought it was hilarious).
Never mind changing my name if I had to. Imagine instead if we had to all take the same name. There was in fact a surprising benefit to our little experiment and group gag. Whenever you needed or wanted something, say a cold beer at the bar, you’d just yell, “hey Lou, grab me a cold one would ya?”
Magically, twelve cold ones appeared on the table just a the dart you three landed in the bullseye.
