The Naked Truth

“She had ‘em! She had ‘em!
She had a pair of BVDs.
She wore ‘em, she wore ‘em
She wore ‘em down
below her knees.
She wore ‘em in the springtime
She wore ‘em in the fall
and when she went out on a date
She didn’t wear ‘em at all
Oh, she had ‘em
She had ‘em
She had a pair of BVDs

~ an old drinking song

Before I mention the oldest thing I am wearing today, just imagine for a minute never wearing the same pair of underwear twice. Can you imagine? Yes! What I am saying is that you would need a new pair of briefs, panties, or boxer shorts for everyday of the week, every week of the month, and every month of the year. 365 pairs of whatever undergarment suits you, and two pairs on workout days. That is precisely the dilemma that a friend of mine has, and yes you guessed it, this fetish is part of a much more complicated complex, no doubt related to his obsessive hand washing and compulsive cleanliness. He’s a germaphobe.

Me? I am not a slob by any measure but my boxers are, if I am being generous, from 2014 — 9-years ago. I do not don a new pair of boxer for every wear. My friend has worn 3,285 different pairs of boxer shorts in the interim, not counting the new pairs he’d put on after a run or a workout.

Maybe it’s because he is a doctor and has profound knowledge that I do not have. He understands the devastating consequences of diseases born by little bugs we call germs and so believes the science around bacteria and viruses . He doesn’t believe in astrology because unlike those little bugs, which for the most part remain unseen, planets are so far away that they cannot “touch” us — not in any physically way.

Maybe my friend “believes” in bugs a little too much? What bugs me is that some people can “believe” in astrology a little too much. Astrologers will make decision everyday based on the stars, pulling up a new chart the way he pulls up brand new pair of briefs. I find it interesting that most of humanity has gotten on just fine with scant knowledge of astrology, yet there also seems a new boom unfolding in astrology.

So, what do I believe about astrology? I believe astrology can provide seekers an edge to help them make their lives better. But taken too far we could be forcing more changes than necessary, or just tending to the surface of things, ignoring the truly transformational and deep work that needs tending within all of us. Simply put, that shit, the deep shit, is not on your chart, it’s within.
