FIVE GOLDEN RINGS

“Good thoughts bear good fruit, bad thoughts bear bad fruit.”

~ James Allen

Today’s prompt asks me to “list” my favorite fruits:

  • STRAWBERRIES
  • Blueberries
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Peaches

Strawberries have been at the top of the list my entire life. Next, are blueberries which I just wrote about in my post The Best Blueberry Pancakes, and the experience begs the question as to whether we have favorites at all, or if our experiences influence our preferences and we simply attach good or bad memories to whatever piques our senses?

Apples fall into this category since I live in the Hudson Valley which is perhaps the apple capital of the world. I cannot count the time I have been lost on an orchard, somewhere high up on the flimsy limb of an Empire tree, reaching for the richest red jewel under the sun, and like Adam himself, jonesin big time to take a big bite of the apple. If eating the fruit of the world is a sin, sign me up. I’m a fucking sinner!

Peaches and Pears really do not belong last on the list, especially if one considers that you can’t really have blueberries or peaches by themselves, alone, not when they both are available. Throw them in pie or cobbler — together — or just in a bowl… they pair like Chardonnay with lobster. And besides, as far as pears go, there obviously would be no turtle doves, and no partridge, much less five golden rings, without the pear tree.

I think an unsung heroes of the fruit world are cherries… no wait!… watermelon… oh god we could on and on…

Let’s try something else besides listing our favorite fruit. Just grab a huge bowl and add cut up a watermelon, add cherries, blueberries, strawberries, perhaps a little kiwi and coconut, and the juice of one or two limes. Serve this heavenly medley to your dinner guests for desert, sprinkle with your favorite granola. Forget about the cake, let them eat fruit bowls.
