“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve.”

~ Martin Luther King Jr.

Community service has become such a buzz word and resume filler. I think the movement, if we can call it that, may have started gaining traction back in 1993 at the conjunction of Uranus and Neptune.

But what I’ve observed is that the yeoman’s work gets done by the frontline employees as the “community service” mantra has become institutionalized and appropriated by corporate America for being more ESG (environmental, social, and governance) than a competitor. When someone had the bright idea that ESG was good for a companies stock price the press was on to “encourage” (in many instances force) full participation in community service.

At one level this is great, but at another level, when one witnesses firsthand the resentment and deflated sense of agency, limiting personal responsibility through coercion, I wonder if corporate involvement in community service hasn’t stolen the spirit of participation, making contributions less heartfelt and less meaningful than could be.

I give a fair amount of my professional chops away on the subreddit astrologyreadings where I am a moderator if I have a spare minute in the day. Often members of the community cannot afford the $250 for a session so this is a way of giving back. In some instances however my efforts are rewarded handsomely because my mini text-readings act as a loss leader and I end up acquiring a great client who appreciates my approach.

Moving forward I think that the biggest growth sector of the economy will be social work to address the massive displacement ahead caused by technological advance and an imminent crash of the markets/economy.
