Snake Eyes

“Queimada Grande”

I would not like to visit Snake Island (Ilha da Queimada Grande), Brazil: Home to thousands of deadly golden lancehead vipers, making it the deadliest place for venomous snake encounters in the world.

“Queimada Grande” means Large Burn — the island was named after the Brazilian Navy’s attempt to control the overwhelming snake population by burning the vegetation, yet the golden lancehead vipers thrived despite these efforts, leaving the island to its true inhabitants, the deadly snakes.

I remember growing up and playing dice games at my grandmother’s dining room table. She use to “shoot craps” by throwing dice of stair stoops in Jersey City as a young girl. We played a game called ‘piggy.’ The goal was to get the highest accumulative score before passing the die, or going back to your previous score by rolling a seven, or god forbid losing all your points by throwing “snake eyes.” All 36 cousins would erupt in unison “SNAKE EYES!!” But Snake Island brings a whole new meaning to the phrase.
