“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

To be completely honest, although I’ve read many books and have seen my share of films, I really don’t spend any bandwidth fantasizing about being a character other than myself.
My reasoning is simple, or to put it in the words of Popeye the sailor, “I yam who I yam, and that’s all that I yam.”
It’s hard enough being oneself without the distraction of trying to be someone or something I am not. So, I’ll embrace the notion of working toward being a better version of myself today than I was yesterday. There is an existentialist framework beneath this phrase that suggests embracing one’s true self despite external pressures and adversity.
A quote is found in the Bible that echoes Popeye’s sentiment, from Exodus. It reads “I am who I am”, emphasizing being one’s authentic self in the face of uncertainty is a sign of spiritual health and strength.
We could say that the times we live in now are fraught with as much uncertainty as we have seen in many years. In such times we probably just need to eat more spinach, fortify who we really are instead of imagining we are somebody else.
