Changes

“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life – and travel – leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks – on your body or on your heart – are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt”

~ Anthony Bourdain

Like the all-weather tires on my Subaru Outback, I am versatile and adaptable in my preference for weather. Growing up, I felt an undeniable allure for fall—the crisp air and autumn colors—but as I’ve grown older I’ve come to embrace the beauty in the idea captured in psalm that “there is a time for every season”.

Who doesn’t love a summer rain after a long heat wave? Drizzle and mist spray on the skin, cooling and mingling with an earthy aroma of rain-soaked ground that hangs in the air. A fresh awakening, accompanied by a sense of vitality that quickens the pace.

Each season carries its own rhythm, and astrologers are well aware as to how individuals express this rhythm which is on full display in whatever season we are born. The changes remind us of life’s constant motion and our remarkable ability to adapt.

When I was a runner my all-weather attitude helped me appreciate taking the same course over and over again. Doing my 3-mile loop in the pouring rain was exhilarating! An experience of being alive, that was as distinct from running in full sun as it was from running it in a snow storm.

I think the changing weather of our lives and our ability to acclimate to it is more amazing than some static ideal that attempts to create “living in paradise” conditions. The ideal isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be — anyone who has suffered through just one episode of White Lotus probably knows this. Even an excessively curated romantic get away can turn ugly or get boring!

There is a Norwegian saying that says “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.” If we dress appropriately then we will be prepared for whatever the day will bring. Give me something a little bit closer to earth, rooted in the reality of the world. Real people! Real food! Real life! More like an Anthony Bourdain production than White Lotus, where I can express my insatiable appetite for “parts unknown.”
