“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”
~ Joseph Campbell

Resilient! The one word that describes me and to some extent all of us who aspire to accomplish something but have not given up. Or maybe the word relates to a tenacity for just hanging on, not letting go of responsibilities in the face of adversity.
I think psychological resilience is the most powerful form of the word. Suffering a loss, an illness, or personal setback that forces the self inward, to discover and realize strengths and determination one never thought they had can be revelatory.
I have my own personal stories. I’ve overcome some of the big ones we tend to talk about within the context of resilience: divorce, death of a loved one, illness, and the job vagaries of employment. But my pride is quickly humbled when I consider the acts of heroes, for example what the Tuskegee Airmen or Navajo Code Talkers accomplished during wartime and under incredible duress of racism. Remarkable stories of people who made outsized contributions to the very society and culture that persecuted them.
But let’s remember that heroes can also be ordinary.
