The Secret to Longevity

“Every man desires to live long, but no man wishes to be old”

~ Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels

The odds of you living to 100-years-old as I tap out this message are presently less than 1% in 2025. If you were a woman and a person of color, then you’d have slightly better odds at reaching the ripe old age of a centenarian.

If you happen to be reading this on your birthday in 2061, then you’ve arrived. And, as you take it all in — your abundantly long life — appreciate all the goodness that came your way, and the goodness you in turn got to share with others. No doubt you’ve made peace with past grievances and worries that kept you up at night. People tend to live short lives who are caught up in the entanglements of life, and do not appear to reach an advanced age, much less age 100, when stress and anxiety take a toll. Somewhere along the way you must have learned to let go and surrender to the unfolding universe in such a way wherein you could make an impact, and a personal contribution to the great good .

Well done. And if it feels right to pass the baton, to let time march on without you, then Godspeed my friend. If not, if there’s more to do, and you are capable, then know that the world is grateful and appreciates you with as much vigor as you can express gratitude just for being alive in the world. That may in fact be the secret to your longevity — and the world’s.

Peace-Out

HVA
