Looking out through five large windows forming a glass wall in my “Great Room,” I see the hilly outline of the Catskills, where gray skies meet foothills through a veil of hemlocks and black walnut trees. Yet, as my gaze shifts to my phone—a habit many of us share—I swipe to check the weather app: ‘Chance of rain in the next hour.’

This reflection brings me back to a question that often troubles me: the one I hate to be asked. A repetitive question that reminds me of Dave Matthews Band’s The Space Between, a song about the gaps in relationships that grow when we fail to connect meaningfully. Relationships need tending, like fires; without care, they smolder into orange embers, seething with heat, or they burn out entirely. Little questions can annoy us not because they lack importance but because they interrupt our internal monologues, widening ‘the space between.’” So, remember! Feed the fire of your love by nourishing the connections that truly matter so that you’ll stay warm, even in a downpour.
