Free Speech

“The pendulum of the mind alternates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong.”

~ Carl Jung

Prohibitions or restrictions on speech are ultimately self-defeating. Free speech can be messy and inconvenient in the short run, and theoretically free speech might even be weaponized in the form of propaganda.

In Astrology the word “afflicted” is an excellent example. A renowned humanistic astrologer used to admonish students from using such archaic language. Fast forward less than a decade and revivalism has reintroduced old terms and made the vogue again.

There is a cost to banning words, and we can also say there is a cost for mandating certain words be spoken. At some point in time the pendulum swings wherein words that were banned reappear, and other words, disappear.

I can’t think of a good reason to ban any word from general use.
