A Drop in the Ocean

“The most important aspect of the churning tale is the creation of an axial alignment, a stable point around which the dynamic motion occurs. The churning takes place inside the spiritual human structure – inside the ‘Ocean of consciousness’.”

~ Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet

Clearly my morning coffee is an indulgence. The aroma, and first to last sip invite comfort and familiarity to start the day. Preparing and drinking my morning shake also reaches a level of ritual that sometimes feels as if I am pouring pure light into my veins. I imagine all the goodness of the Sun’s rays permeating and distributing throughout my system, pouring into every nook and cranny. Even the cells beyond the nooks, and above the crannies, Hillman’s acorn, or Moore’s soul, Norelli-Bachelet’s stable point, are quenched in my mind’s eye, by my green elixir. But these pleasures are frivolous except perhaps for the fact that there is real nutrition packed into Athletic Greens. Even so, compared to most people in the world, with average global annual income hitting only $13,000, concepts like drink supplements (never mind intermittent fasting) are a luxury.

Therefore, I suppose my favorite elixir is related to those rarest of times when I experienced a kind of transcendent bliss. In spiritual practice this is referred to as Amrita, like nectar from the Sun flowing throughout my body during prayer or meditation. The Rigveda refers to this sacred drink of the gods as Soma.

The myth of Samudra Manthana, or “churning of the ocean,” depicts the devas on one side and asuras on the other pulling on a rope (Vasuki, a serpent). The serpent Vasuki, often associated with the Nodal Axis in astrology, may symbolize this cosmic interplay. The rope wraps around a rod (Mount Mandara) providing leverage for the churning of the universe and suggests an unwitting cooperation is involved. Amrita means immortality or nectar in Sanskrit, and symbolizes the extracted divine elixir of the gods in the myth, the byproduct of a cosmic battle between the opposing forces at work in the universe.

Anyone who drinks this elixir is promised eternal life.

As much as I like my coffee first thing in the morning, and as much as I love my greens, I’d have to say my favorite drink is Amrita, even though I’ve not tasted a single drop.
