True Leadership

“The Purusha has that capacity; for the spirit within can always change and perfect the working of its own nature.”

Synthesis of Yoga, Sri Aurobindo

Bhūri aspașța kartvam; being the person, thing, or idea that is present or near in place, time, or thought or has just been mentioned.

The question of leadership, at the intrapersonal level, it seems to me is more pertinent today than whoever gets more “likes” on a social media post, or more “votes” to become the leader of a country. However, our conception of what it takes to be a leader is fraught with a distortion: Bhūri aspașța kartvam.

“Man is a mental being and the mind is the leader of his life and body; but this is a leader who is much led by his followers and has sometimes no other will than what they impose on him.”

The Life Divine

~ Sri Aurobindo

The question, turned in on itself, begs another question that asks “are you able to access the larger mental, vital, and subtle-physical being that is in essence encapsulated by your surface body-consciousness?” This is the most thought provoking attitude about leadership, which is to identify the Self with a larger inner being who we can begin to know, and whereby discover the source of our thoughts and feelings, and hence the motivations of our actions or inactions; all the stuff that builds up and coalesces into our surface personality: what I call the Astral Core.

[Pro Tip] Astrological consultations tend to work at the surface level; our thoughts, feelings and emotions. There is an organizing intelligence that can be analytically helpful, but the separate components representing the heart and mind get mixed, but still remain separated, creating contradictions and struggles that suggests how the energisms only impose an “imperfect order.” As good an explanation as any to help us understand the many dispositions a personality can put on display in a single day: the many parts of the self are caught up in a cross fire, of self-talk. What results is confusion, conflict, and discord, a babel of noise.

One of the lofty goals of practicing holistic astrology is to introduce SYNTHESIS at the symbolic level and the potential of how the separate nature and action of the components can be harmonized into a SINGULARITY, a Whole Being.

Without the inner being endeavoring to integrate the parts of the self, to LEAD this crucial process, serious danger and possibly disaster can result. When an exaggerated sense of self, narcissism, and selfishness reign, the potential for self-knowledge is subsumed by a more powerful ignorance. In this case, no matter how accomplished the personality is in the outer world, they are not a leader.

It is better to look through another lens, and not necessarily out into the world, or the cosmos, but into your own heart and mind, or deeper, into the psychic being. The true spirit of leadership is only ever kindled by the ever present spark of an individual soul’s (Purusha) awakening.
