Astrology is in some respect a synthetic representation of reality. But symbolic modeling is neither good nor bad, save for the interpretation; the application of the data. Astrology is one of humanity’s earliest structured practices of celestial observation and interpretation, serving as a precursor to both scientific inquiry and religious frameworks. However, the practice nearly faded into oblivion, maligned and ridiculed, demonized really, by powers set against astrology. Today there are so many different applications and approaches to astrology that it is difficult for the laity to distinguish one model from the next. We could say that both religion and technology share similar trajectories over time, as compared to the great sacred science.

History doesn’t repeat itself, but… in some sense, here we are again. I was about to write one line: “I would un-invent religion!” However, analogously I thought, no “let me un-invent social media algorithms.”

The problem here is that un-inventing a thing, Astrology, Religion, or Social Media Algorithms won’t change the basic challenge we face, which requires a shift in consciousness. The disarray we witness in fields of thought depends on observations that tap into deep human vulnerabilities: the need for belonging, identity, and validation. Social media algorithms, like organized religion, (and Astrology) create “bespoke realities” by reinforcing beliefs through tailored content. “Owning” the “right” or “best” method leads to tribalism and polarization.

Sentimentally, many people point to religious participation as a way of building community, but an entrenched mindset, set in the ways we believe also divides us, divides communities, when dogma is weaponized.

All systems seem to thrive on emotional engagement and identity performance, shaping perceptions of truth and morality. The correspondences highlight how perspectives can inform our view, the “data” which is meant to unite or divide, depending on where we stand, our point of view (our priors and biases).

Un-inventing Astrology, Religion, or Social Media Algorithms, will not change the misalignment in incentives or poor design. Prioritizing accuracy over engagement sounds appealing but impractical when accuracy of the Indeterminate in reality is still so far away. We understand how human psychology is vulnerable to the manipulations that serve certain power structures, but seem to lack the social awareness, or do not have the collective will to raise individual consciousness to the degree necessary to avert unpleasant side effects.

The change for me happens one consultation at a time. I have a particular skill and training based on an appreciation of the Indeterminate and therefore do not foist “my model” on others. Instead, the goal is to engage in a dialogue, not about my priors and biases, but you and your lived experience.
