“The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.”

~ Warren Buffet

The decision to live a more sustainable lifestyles happens at a very young age in terms of financial sustainability and presumes consistent, gainful, and uninterrupted employment. But this playbook has worked well for only a very small percentage of society.

Most people working part time have no access to retirement planning, and almost half of the full time workforce have no retirement access either. Of those working, the private system seems skewed to benefit the top 10% of households, who have accumulated on average almost $800,000 of assets in a retirement plans. Even this amount falls short of fully-funding retirement. But it’s better than the bottom half of savers who have only accumulated on average about $60,000.

Spending $10 a day at Starbucks is not a daily practice that promises a sustainable lifestyle. Interestingly, if one were to take that $10 per day and instead of buying coffee decided to put $10 per day into the S&P 500, that person would accumulate $700,000 — $750,000 over 30 years (At an average rate of return of 10 1/2%). Imagine that! A small decision, that if you had made it 30 years ago would have landed you in the top 10%. If 25 years has gone by and you’ve not started then it’s time to brush up on the facts and come up with an alternative. A retirement crisis is blooming as we speak — people are unprepared. The quickest way there is through inheritance but if that’s not in the cards, then you’ll need to get creative to solve such a thorny issue.

My focus is on building a sustainable income, not through retirement, but through the establishment and expansion of my business. Hopefully, a growing component of this income will be passive income, monies that are generated on an ongoing basis whether or not I actually work on any particular day.

My daily practice toward this end is reading, studying and writing everyday to build a framework from which to fortify my astrological counseling practice.
